A proposed course on English Literature to be held at the Department for Continuing Education, Oxford University in conjunction with St Antony's College Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre in May 2009
(1) This course is intended for Russian teachers of English Literature. They may be specialist teachers of literature OR teachers of language with serious literary interests who are trying to leach literature partly through the medium of our Contemporary English Novels. Participants just have good spoken English - and be willing to use it in discussions. We want keen and argumentative people who read widely. We are not concerned with super-correct English, and this course is not about improving your English language, though naturally we expect that you will do so. It is about literature.
If we have many applicants, places will be given first to those people who have been active participants from active universities in the Contemporary Literature project. Participants will receive an official invitation from the University through St Antony's College.
(2) Dates The Department for Continuing Education (OUDCE) can accommodate this course , in early May (from 2nd -16th May) but after that it will be more difficult to find rooms for th£ seminars. I therefore need to know rather quickly whether I can find ten suitable participants. We need 10 participants for it to be viable.
(3) The course.
The content of the course will not be finalised until I know the special enthusiasms of the participants. It will probably include a nineteenth century novel, some poetry, one or two short stories and a twentieth century novel. Perhaps a play. Set works must be read before the course, so participants will be informed well in advance.
In any case, the course will include talks with discussions by English literature specialists, seminars on homework prepared in Russia, close analysis of selected texts with a specialist teacher, opportunities to attend university lectures on literature, and individual tutorials. Classes will be held in Rewley House where meals, tea and coffee will be taken. Participants will be able to use the Rewley Mouse library and, if appropriate, the English Faculty Library. There will be и full day excursion to London, and a half day (or more) excursion to the English countryside. Participants will be free during the middle week-end to explore on their own.
Accommodation will be with friendly individual families in central Oxford or the inner suburbs.
(4) Course costs and fees.
Cost of the academic course: Teaching, use of libraries, specialist information, seminar materials, organisation and directing of the course: £400
Cost of bed and breakfast accommodation in Oxford for 2 weeks: £260
Cost of substantial midday meals, tea and coffee at Rewley House: £130
Cost of two excursions: to London and to the Oxfordshire countryside £80
Cost of travel from Heathrow to Oxford and return £30
Cost of administration, including completion certificate for each student. £40 (This is optional. It is a signed certificate of completion for those needing it for 'professional improvement' reasons - but it is not an official document from Oxford University, since these can only be awarded to people who have taken an examined course.)
Total sum: £940 (with certificate). £900 (without certificate). The fee can be paid in cash to Karen Hewitt as Academic Exchange Officer and a receipt will be provided by St Antony's Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre. This is the simplest option. Alternatively you can pay by bank transfer into a special St Antony's College account. You or your university will be responsible for organising the bank transfer. I will, of course, supply the details of the bank account into which it must be paid.
Not included: Visas; airfares; personal travel insurance; local bus fares; evening meals (although the students will receive some hospitality, and their evening meals on the excursion days vyill be covered so this will probably mean about six or seven meals), personal expenses.
